This ceramic washbasin is inspired by the landscapes and wildlife encountered during the artist’s travels in Arusha, Tanzania, a region where vast savannahs, tropical vegetation, and extraordinary animals coexist in vibrant harmony.

The basin is wheel-thrown and entirely hand-painted, transforming the interior into a vivid narrative of the African wilderness. At the center of the composition appear the gentle faces of a zebra, giraffe, elephant, and antelope, surrounded by lush foliage and desert plants. Among the leaves grow branches of prickly pear cactus, dotted with small fruits that evoke the resilient vegetation of warm African climates.

The animals emerge from the greenery as calm and curious presences, symbolizing the peaceful balance between wildlife and nature that characterizes the landscapes around Arusha, Mount Meru, and the Serengeti ecosystem.

Each animal carries its own symbolism within the composition:

  • The zebra represents individuality, balance, and harmony within diversity.
  • The giraffe symbolizes grace, perspective, and the ability to see far beyond the horizon.
  • The elephant embodies wisdom, memory, strength, and deep connection to family and community.
  • The antelope (gazelle) represents agility, alertness, and the quiet elegance of life in the savannah.

Together they form a circular composition radiating from the center of the basin, creating a dynamic scene that feels like a living safari landscape captured within ceramic form.

The softly speckled glaze on the exterior enhances the natural palette of greens, warm earth tones, and golden hues found inside the basin, reinforcing the connection to the African terrain.
